What does a Connected jobsite look like? Here's a
look at three key Trimble technologies that, when
implemented correctly, stand to increase project
productivity and profitability:
1. Extended Reality (XR)
A variety of industries are harnessing "reality"
technology to improve and expand operations and
drive growth. For construction, that technology
includes virtual reality, augmented reality and
mixed reality. Jointly, they are referred to as
extended reality or XR.
Though XR may sound like something out of science
fiction, any company using BIM already has the

foundation for using it. In many ways, XR is the next
level of looking at digital plans. The difference is that
the technology (typically a smartphone, laptop or
heads-up visor combined with cloud-based software)
allows workers to see the digital plans in the physical
context of the site itself.
"Because of the contextual nature of XR, you can
then look around and see the plans from different
angles," said Ben Broad, Trimble product manager
for building construction field solutions.
When you're actually
immersed inside the
information, it intuitively
and instinctively opens the
door to people who may
be a little less comfortable
accessing all the rich
information contained in
a digital asset."
As work progresses, XR allows the field and office to
see changes in real-time, which helps head off delays,
clashes and rework.
"There's always something in the plan that has
changed," said Nathan Patton, Trimble product
marketing manager for strategy and innovation. "XR
allows you to see the latest design in context to the
site. You actually see how it needs to get built."
